His real name was Nagatani. He trained in the Kano school and studied alongside Kano Hogai. Recognized by Fenollosa and Okakura Tenshin, he contributed greatly to the establishment of modern Japanese painting. As a professor at the Tokyo Fine Arts School, he taught artists such as Yokoyama Taikan, Shimomura Kanzan, and Hishida Shunsō. He was also a founding member of the Japan Art Institute. His representative works include White Clouds and Red Trees.
